Course Description: In “Fun and Success using a Multisensory Model to Work with Children with Complex Needs” Dr. Hinrichs will teach the neurology behind why multisensory is most effective and multisensory techniques and approaches which she has used effectively for many years. This will allow you to become immediately more successful in your practice. Most importantly, your patients and their parents will recognize this success. Throughout the course actual cases will be used to demonstrate the impact.
Goals and Objectives:
Present an evidence-based integrated model of vision for special populations using multisensory information
A better understanding of the impact and most effective use of information in the optometric evaluation
Identify adaptations of optometric testing to improve success in this population
Understand how to modify history taking to better educate and prepare for the issues
Demonstrate how the information gathered using interdisciplinary assessments can be used to impact treatment
Better awareness of the common types of developmental disabilities in children that can have disruptive behaviors
Educate staff in the office to increase success in these populations
Develop better understanding of priorities for this population and appropriate referrals
Actual cases will be shared to demonstrate how this knowledge improves your success.

Dr. Celia Hinrichs has worked with children and adults with multiple issues, complicated strabismic patients, and head trauma patients for over forty years. She has taught at New England College of Optometry’s Specialty Clinic and in the classroom, managed a private practice in optometric vision rehabilitation, and held both teaching and staff optometry positions at the Perkins Low Vision Clinic. For more than twenty years, she developed her own practice where she did optometric vision therapy every day. From 1990-2017, Dr. Hinrichs was the staff optometrist for New England Center for Children, a school geared to children with significant behavioral difficulties and autism. She was selected as Chair of the International Exam Board for College of Optometrists in Vision Development from 2008 to 2011. and won the President’s Award in 2011 for her work.
She was excited to complete her clinical career teaching again at NECO Specialty Clinic. Throughout her career, she has lectured, taught, and written on the needs of patients with multiple issues, complicated strabismus, and head trauma. Recently she coauthored a chapter in Applied Concepts in Vision Therapy 2.0 on Multisensory Assessment in Optometric Evaluation and Treatment. She continues to lecture on these topics, but has retired from patient care.
